Mangroves are the natural vegetation of muddy, lowlying coasts throughout the tropics. In Costa Rica, there are five species of mangrove, and they form extensive forests on both the Caribbean and Pacific shores. None of the five species is closely related to each other, but they have all evolved to survive in seawater and saline silt with various adptations.
Known to botanists as halophytes, these trees have mechanisms for getting rid of excess salt and elaborate roots that anchor them in the shifting mud.
Costa Rican mangrove swamps abound with life like the mangrove tree crab, land crabs, snakes, monkeys, and birds.
